Ineptitude sees crisis continue.

D- gradeTenants and families caught in Calgary’s rental inflation are now out of luck because the Homelessness and Eviction Prevention Fund is out of money.

Watching the Stelmach government throw money at the housing crisis was like watching Premier Klein during the BSE crisis when he threw hundreds of millions of dollars into the deep pockets of foreign-owned meatpacking giants. The farmers barely got a warm handshake, the meatpackers got the goldmine, and Alberta taxpayers got the shaft.

Why Alberta Liberal policy gets a better grade:

Right now, thousands of Albertans can’t find a safe, affordable place to live. There aren’t enough affordable homes and rental spaces available to meet rising demand.

As more and more people flock to Alberta in search of a better life, as our economy’s demand for skilled labour continues to rise, it becomes crucial to address this problem with workable solutions.

An economy cannot reach its full potential without homes for its workers, nor can individuals and families take full advantage to Alberta’s vast opportunity without an affordable place to live.The Alberta Liberals have a plan to meet this crisis head-on. Our policy will:

    create 10,000 units of affordable housing      within five years;
   • ensure Albertans who need it have      access to safe and affordable housing;

   • protect tenants from rent gouging while      respecting landlords ; and
   • make home ownership affordable for      more Albertans.

  1. Do the math. After a couple pays for rent, child care, food, clothing, utilities and transit, what’s left to go toward that $45,000 down payment?

It’s no wonder more and more wage earners are visiting food banks and such. They are forced to make choices no Albertan should have to make: Do I buy food or pay for housing?

Although cooling slightly, our booming housing market has still left many young people in the dust. There is no way they can ever own a home. Welcome to the Alberta Advantage!
